Fans of the Half-Life series have been eagerly awaiting news of Half-Life 3 for some time now and Gabe Newell, Managing Director of Valve has spoken out. In a podcast with Seven Day Cooldown, Newell explains that it is fairer to the fans for Valve to keep quiet about Half-Life 3, rather unveil details or hint at release dates which may change at any time.
Newell goes on to say that “The problem is, we think that the twists and turns that we’re going through would probably drive people more crazy than just being silent about it, until we can be very crisp about what’s happening next”
Newell was then asked about Ricochet 2. Ricochet was one of the first games release onto Steam, as of yet there have been no expectations of a sequel. The framing of the question definitely hinted at Ricochet 2 as a code name for Half-Life 3.
“In terms of Ricochet 2, we always have this problem that when we talk about things too far in advance,” said Newell. “We end up changing our minds as we’re going through and developing stuff, so as we’re thinking through the giant story arc which is Ricochet 2, you might get to a point where you’re saying something is surprising us in a positive way and something is surprising us in a negative way, and, you know, we’d like to be super-transparent about the future of Ricochet 2.”
Not the solid announcement that so many are hoping for, but it is encouraging at least to know that Half-Life 3 is in development.
