Whilst the overall majority of gamers and comic book fans heralded Rocksteady’s Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City games not only for it’s gorgeous environments and spectacular gameplay, but also for it’s work within the Batman universe, another studio was working away on a Batman title. That studio is Day 1 Studios, the developer behind F.3.A.R.
Day 1 Studios had planned to build their Batman game for Xbox 360 and PS3 around the one-shot comic Gotham by Gaslight. The narrative, set at the end of the 19th century, centres itself around the Caped Crusaders mission to hunt down legendary serial killer, Jack the Ripper.
Siliconera reports that Day 1 Studios pitched Gotham By Gaslight between 2009 and 2010 with THQ set to publish who turned it down, leading to the title being canned.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Batman’s steampunk adventure that ended early as Kotaku posted a story back in January regarding concept art of the game being available to view on visual artist, Julie Farrell’s, website.
The concept art has now been taken down and replaced with an update from Julie stating that this was at the request of Day 1 Studios and Warner Brothers however this snippet of information is still there:
“This was a game I was really looking forward to working on. Unfortunately it was just a pitch. I had a blast creating the menus for this game, as steampunk is really quite unique, interesting and something I love to design. I created the bat logo from scratch and used a variety of different clockwork pieces and other metal pieces to construct it.”
It’s a real shame that this title never came to fruition as it looks like it could have been a fantastic game and Gotham BY Gaslight is a highly interesting story. Perhaps one day the title will be able to make a return as it would be criminal for Batfans not to get a chance to see just what this game could have been.
